How Moroccan women
really choose a partner
for marriage
An analysis of 673 women's applications received by DAR TISLIT in France, each stating their priority criteria, shows a real ranking that overturns several stereotypes, starting with the place of looks, far lower than many imagine. The study was carried out in France; we share it because these priorities resonate in Moroccan communities elsewhere, including the UK, the US and Canada.
Faith is by far the top criterion for applicants, named by 84% of them, well ahead of communication (58%) and emotional stability (33%). Physical attraction only comes 5th, at 23%.
The full ranking
Among 673 applications detailing priority criteria for a future husband, this is the hierarchy observed at DAR TISLIT in France:
This ranking differs from our study on what Moroccan women expect from a husband, which asked a different question (general expectations rather than the priority selection criterion). The two complement rather than repeat each other.

With 84% of applicants naming it, faith is not one criterion among many: it is by far the dominant one. The gap to second place (communication, 58%) is 26 points, one of the two widest gaps in the ranking.
This confirms what our article on why so many serious Moroccans stay single already hinted at: religious and spiritual compatibility is often the real breaking point in conventional dating, long before looks or social status.
What matters (and what matters much less)
Looks are not ignored, but they are far from decisive. Only 23% of applicants list them among their priorities, in 5th place, behind faith, communication, emotional stability and financial security.
Cultural or regional compatibility comes last. At just 5%, this criterion, often assumed to be essential in clichés about Moroccan marriages, is in fact the least decisive. Personal values and religious practice matter far more than region of origin.
Communication and emotional stability weigh heavily. Together they make up most of what, in applicants' own words, separates a relationship that lasts from one that fails, far more than lighter criteria such as humour (15%) or ambition (7%).

For men wondering what really matters to a serious applicant, this ranking gives a concrete answer: religious practice and quality of communication weigh far more than appearance or status. A sincere, stable profile objectively carries more weight than one that is “impressive” on paper.
For women who hesitate to own their priorities, these figures confirm they are not alone: the vast majority of applicants put the same values first. That is neither excessive nor unusual. It is the norm.
