What Moroccan women
really expect from a husband
in marriage

Written by the DAR TISLIT team · reviewed by Nadia, founder · updated on 18 October 2026

DAR TISLIT received and analysed more than 900 applications from women in France through its confidential forms. Each woman completed an in-depth questionnaire covering her personality, values, view of marriage and what she looks for in a man. What they shared does not always match the stereotypes. Here is what those applications reveal, with figures. The study was carried out in France; we share it because these expectations will be familiar to many Moroccan families, including in the UK, the US and Canada.

Quick answer

According to an analysis of 900+ women's applications received in France, 44% name respect as their absolute priority, 41% family values, 34% faith and 31% stability. Finances do count, but never come first.

What is Moroccan women's absolute priority in marriage?

The answer is clear: respect. In these applications, 44% of women name it as the most important quality in a man. Not income, not looks, not social status. Respect.

The word comes up in several forms: respect in the way someone speaks, respect for personal space, respect for the other person's decisions. For these women it is the foundation without which nothing can be built. A man who shows respect from the first exchanges immediately gets ahead of the rest.

Right behind it, 41% mention family values: the vision of the home, the relationship with children, the place given to the extended family. These two criteria form a foundation that almost all applicants consider non-negotiable.

What role does faith play in choosing a husband?

A central one. 84% of the women surveyed place faith among the three most important elements of a marriage, and 34% spontaneously name it when describing the man they are looking for.

This does not necessarily mean a high level of practice. What these women look for is a shared framework of values: a common view on raising children, a moral foundation that structures family life, and consistency between what is said and what is lived every day.

For many, faith is also a sign of seriousness. It signals an awareness of the weight of the commitment, a gravity that reassures. A man who is clear about his religious values without being rigid comes across as reliable and grounded.

Which behaviours are deal-breakers?

The applications also taught us what Moroccan women will not tolerate. The most frequent reasons for saying no paint a very clear picture.

Disrespect comes first (22%). It mirrors the first criterion: if respect is the most sought-after quality, its absence is logically the most disqualifying.

Stinginess (18%) follows close behind. Not a demand for a rich man, but a refusal of one who counts every penny, bargains over his generosity or seems to see the household as a burden rather than an investment. The difference between thrift and miserliness is perfectly well understood. Lying (17%), violence (16%) and selfishness (10%) complete the picture. A man who is self-centred or lacks transparency is ruled out from the first exchanges.

These findings are valuable for the men reading this: they show that staying single is not always a matter of circumstance, but sometimes of attitude.

Stability and life plans: what they look for in practice

31% of women name stability as an essential criterion. But the word covers far more than financial circumstances: emotional stability, maturity in decision-making, the ability to build a long-term plan.

What comes up often is the need to feel that the man across from them has a direction. Not necessarily an exceptional career, but a clear vision of his life, of what he wants to build and of the place a wife and children take in that plan.

36% of the women surveyed mention Morocco in their long-term plans. Whether a permanent return or extended stays, this link with the country of origin is a subject serious men should be ready to discuss.

The real profile of women seeking a serious marriage

The women's applications DAR TISLIT receives dismantle several preconceptions. They are not only young women looking for a first marriage.

A third of applicants describe themselves as divorced. They have been through a first marriage, learned from it, and know precisely what they want and no longer want. Their clarity is an asset, not a handicap.

Many of these divorced women already have children. That is significant: many women who have been through a first marriage are now mothers looking for a partner able to embrace that reality with kindness. A man who accepts and values this family dimension stands out immediately.

These mature profiles, clear about what they expect, are often the most compatible with serious men who themselves want to build a solid home. At DAR TISLIT, each profile is individually reviewed through an in-depth confidential questionnaire before any introduction.

How can a man prepare for this encounter?

The data paints a fairly precise portrait of the man these women are looking for. Not an unattainable ideal, nor a shopping list. It is a matter of attitude.

Show respect from the start. In how you communicate, in the questions you ask, in the pace of the relationship. The women we support recognise sincerity within a few exchanges.

Be clear about your intentions. Ambiguity is the first reason people are ruled out. A man who says he wants to marry and acts accordingly stands out naturally. Honesty about your situation (work, family, personal) is read as a sign of maturity.

Have a vision of family. Moroccan women are not looking for a partner simply to share daily life. They are looking for someone to build a home with, raise children with and keep ties with both families and with Morocco.

A human, discreet and marriage-oriented approach: coming soon near you.
