How Long Should You Know Someone Before Marriage? What Moroccan Singles Say

“In our family, we marry quickly.” “You need to really know each other first.” Whether you live in London, Manchester, New York or Toronto, these two lines come up in every Moroccan family, and many singles no longer know which pace is right. At DAR TISLIT, we ask everyone who writes to us the same question: how soon do you see yourself getting married? Here is what candidates answer, and how to apply it when you live in an English-speaking country.

Quick answer

There is no ideal timeline, but most singles of Moroccan heritage looking for a serious marriage aim to marry within a year. According to an analysis of 688 applications from women received by DAR TISLIT in France, 79% of women plan to marry within the year (51% within 6 to 12 months, 28% as soon as possible). Among men (192 answers), 54% aim for less than a year, but more than one in four are not sure yet.

How long before getting married? The study figures

An important note: the figures in this article come from applications received by DAR TISLIT in France, where the agency already supports people of Moroccan heritage. They are not UK, US or Canadian statistics, but they give a clear picture of the expectations of a Moroccan diaspora that shares the same culture and traditions.

Our application form asks how soon people plan to marry. Out of 688 women who answered:

51%
plan to marry within 6 to 12 months
28%
want to marry as soon as possible
10.5%
are taking their time

Only 9.3% mention a one-to-two-year horizon. In other words, a woman who reaches out to a matchmaking agency is, in the vast majority of cases, ready to commit within the year. The median age of our female candidates, 37, partly explains this, as we show in how old Moroccan women looking for a serious marriage really are.

Women and men: not quite the same pace

Among men, out of 192 candidates:

Men are slightly more likely to want to move very fast, but far more likely not to have set a timeline at all. That “I don't know yet” does not mean they are not serious: it often reflects caution after a first marriage (nearly one candidate in three is divorced) or the wish to meet the right person before talking dates.

The gap is not about seriousness, it is about timing: talking about it early prevents many misunderstandings.

From first meeting to proposal: the realistic stages

For a couple of Moroccan heritage who meet in a serious setting, the road to marriage usually follows the same order, even if each stage lasts longer or shorter depending on the families and the distance.

1. Getting to know each other

A few weeks to a few months of conversations and respectful meetings to check what matters most: faith, family plans, where to live, relationships with parents. Our article on Muslim dating for marriage explains how to stay halal during this stage.

2. Bringing in the families

Meeting the parents, then the formal proposal (the khotba) by the groom's family. When part of the family lives in Morocco or elsewhere, this stage may involve travel or a meeting at a distance.

3. Engagement and Fatiha

Reciting the Fatiha seals the commitment between the two families, sometimes right after the proposal, sometimes once the wedding date is set.

4. Civil formalities

Legal requirements differ widely: giving notice at a register office in the UK, a marriage licence issued by the state or county in the US, provincial rules in Canada. When one partner is a Moroccan national, consulate documents are often needed too. Check with your local authority and the Moroccan consulate, and see our guides for the UK, the US and Canada.

5. The celebration

Henna, the party, outfits, venue: planning often takes several months. The main stages are covered in the stages of a traditional Moroccan wedding abroad.

Put together, these stages explain why “6 to 12 months” is the most common answer: enough time to get to know each other, without letting the relationship drift.

Marrying quickly without skipping steps

Wanting to marry soon is legitimate; in Muslim tradition, a relationship without a framework is not left to drag on. But before setting a date, make sure you have talked about:

A couple who has covered all of these in three months is often better prepared than one who has been seeing each other for two years without ever raising them.

The role of families in the timeline

In the Moroccan diaspora, the wedding date is rarely decided by two people alone. According to an analysis of 686 applications from women received by DAR TISLIT in France, 40% describe family as very important, essential or a pillar of their life, and 18.8% spontaneously mention their parents.

40%
of female candidates see family as essential
48%
prefer a partner from their own region

Parents can speed things up or slow them down: waiting for a summer trip to Morocco, an elder's blessing, a particular time of year. Talk about it openly so that the families' timeline and the couple's come together. Our study of Moroccan singles looking for marriage shows just how ready they are to commit.

DAR TISLIT is for people of Moroccan heritage and reviews every profile to check from the outset that expectations, including timing, are compatible.

Frequently asked questions

How long should you know someone before getting married?
There is no fixed length. Among DAR TISLIT's candidates of Moroccan heritage, most aim to marry within 6 to 12 months. What matters is having discussed faith, where to live, children and families before committing.
Is it a good idea to get married quickly?
It can work very well when the process has a clear framework and both people have shared their expectations. What weakens a marriage is mostly the topics never raised beforehand.
How long does it take to arrange a civil marriage in the UK, US or Canada?
It depends on the country, state or province and on each person's situation. Check with your local authority and the Moroccan consulate for the documents and notice periods required.
Do these figures apply to the UK, US or Canada?
No. They come from applications received by DAR TISLIT in France. They describe the expectations of Moroccan-heritage singles in the diaspora, but they are not local statistics.
Is DAR TISLIT available in English-speaking countries?
Not yet. The agency is opening soon; join the waiting list to be told as soon as it launches.
