who are they really?

Moroccan Singles Looking for Marriage: Who Are They Really? (DAR TISLIT Study)

When you search for “Moroccan singles”, you are rarely looking for a casual date. You are hoping to find someone who shares your culture, your faith and your idea of family. But who exactly are the single men and women of Moroccan heritage who want to marry today? Instead of clichés, here is what the applications received by DAR TISLIT in France show. The service started in France; we share these findings because many families of the Moroccan diaspora in the UK, the US, Canada and beyond will recognise themselves in them.

Quick answer

According to an analysis of 1,276 applications received by DAR TISLIT in France, Moroccan singles looking for a serious marriage have a median age of 37, for women and men alike. Faith and respect are the qualities they mention most, nearly eight in ten women applicants hope to marry within a year, and the vast majority are open to a partner from any region of Morocco, not only their own.

Moroccan singles: who are we talking about?

Behind a search for Moroccan singles there are women and men born or settled outside Morocco, attached to their roots, who want to marry someone with whom they can share a culture, a faith and a way of living family life. Many have a stable career, friends and a loving family, and yet they have not met the right person.

Since DAR TISLIT opened in France, we have received 1,276 applications: 915 from women and 361 from men, all of Moroccan origin and living in Europe, mainly in France and Belgium. Each one was read by a person, and a large share of applicants filled in a detailed questionnaire about their situation, their expectations and their view of marriage. This portrait is built from those answers, aggregated and anonymous: no individual profile can be recognised. These figures describe applicants in France; they are not statistics about your own country.

Age, origins, languages: the portrait in figures

Older than people imagine

The median age is 37, both among the 915 women and the 361 men. On the women's side, the 35-39 age group is the largest (19.6%), followed by 40-44 (18.8%); in total, 41% of women applicants are 40 or older. On the men's side, ages are spread evenly from 25 to 44, and 39% are 40 or older. We looked at this in detail in our study of the real age of Moroccan women looking for a serious marriage: the search for a spouse does not stop at 30, far from it.

Roots from all over Morocco

Agadir is the most frequently mentioned city of origin, cited by 9.5% of women and 12.5% of men, which reflects the weight of the Souss community in Europe. But it is followed by Casablanca, Oujda, Meknes, Rabat, Marrakech, Nador and Berkane: Moroccan singles of the diaspora come from every part of the country.

Darija first, Tachelhit too

Among the women who answered, 65.9% speak Darija fluently (534 answers) and 28.7% speak Tachelhit (Chleuh) fluently (680 answers). Among men, 57.9% speak Darija fluently and 35.7% Tachelhit (171 answers). The language of their parents is still very much alive, even when English, French or Dutch is the language of everyday life. For Amazigh families the question of language often comes up, and we have devoted a whole article to it: do you need to speak Tachelhit to marry a Chleuh?

What Moroccan singles are looking for in a spouse

Asked the open question “What are you looking for in a man?”, 45.6% of women mention religion or religious practice, 44.1% respect and 28.5% sincerity, honesty or faithfulness (678 answers). On the men's side, asked “What are your most important criteria?”, 32.3% mention religion, 26% respect and 24.5% faithfulness or sincerity, while physical appearance appears in only 8.3% of answers (192 answers).

Faith is more than a word on a form: 74.3% of men applicants say they pray regularly (191 answers) and 84.1% say they do not drink alcohol (195 answers). The women's expectations are explored further in our article on what Moroccan women expect from a husband.

Moroccan singles are not looking for the “perfect profile”: they are looking for someone sincere, respectful and who shares their faith.

Another lesson is openness. 79.3% of women applicants are open to any Moroccan man, and only 4.4% want a Chleuh partner exclusively (680 answers). Regional origin matters less today than shared values.

Why so many serious singles do not find anyone on apps

If these women and men are serious, why are they still single? Their answers to “What led you to apply to DAR TISLIT?” are telling: 23.6% of women talk about seriousness, and 15.3% mention apps, websites or social media, usually to say they did not find what they were looking for there (678 answers). 12.5% mention their values or religion.

It is a point that comes up again and again in our conversations: on an app, the intention to marry is rarely clear, profiles are not verified and discretion is hard to guarantee, especially in a community where everybody knows everybody. We compare the two approaches in our article matchmaking agency or dating app.

Then there is life itself: long studies, careers, distance from the extended family, or a fresh start after a first marriage. Among men, 30.9% are divorced and 56.2% have never been married (194 answers). It is not a lack of will but the lack of a suitable setting, a subject we explore in why so many serious Moroccans stay single.

Men and women: closer expectations than you might think

People often say that women want to marry quickly and men hesitate. The figures nuance this. Among women, 50.9% hope to marry within 6 to 12 months and 28.2% “as soon as possible” (680 answers). Among men, 29.6% aim for 6 to 12 months and 24.3% for less than 6 months, but 26.5% do not know yet (189 answers). The pace differs slightly; the wish to commit is there on both sides.

The wish for a family is also widely shared: 73.5% of men want children (170 answers), as do 61.2% of women (680 answers). As for geography, 48.2% of women prefer someone from their own area (679 answers), and 33% of men only look close to home (191 answers): proximity matters, without being a wall.

In other words, most Moroccan singles in the diaspora want the same thing: a spouse who practises or is attached to the faith, respectful and sincere, with whom to build a home within a reasonable time. What is missing is not compatibility but the chance to meet in the right conditions.

Meeting someone serious when you are Moroccan abroad

A few principles stand out from the interviews we conduct:

That is precisely the role of DAR TISLIT. The service is for people of Moroccan origin who want to marry: every application is studied individually, no profile is ever public, and an introduction is only suggested when life plans match. DAR TISLIT currently operates in France and will soon open in other countries; a waiting list is open so you can be told when it reaches you.

Your marriage plans deserve better than a swipe. DAR TISLIT is coming soon outside France: sign up now, it commits you to nothing.
